Art or Excuses?

You know those people who are very creative and have tons to offer the world but they refuse to get started on a project?

Me too. I know them all too well because I used to be one of them.

I never thought of stopping to take a photo of the moss on the ground between the spruce trees.

Moss and Trees

Not too long ago, I wouldn’t have had the skills to get a decent photo of this hoary marmot.

Marmot #1

It frustrates the shit out of me to see other people making the same mistakes. If I hadn’t misplaced my hard copies sometime during my last four moves…if I had just taken my camera…if I had just queried that editor…

It takes time to build up a body of work. Common sense says the sooner you start, the more you’ll have to show for it. The fewer excuses you make, the more time you have to create art.

I get it. I have the same set of excuses as everyone else. I have to go to work and clean out the litter box and cook dinner. And I know I should work on that novel I started writing that one night when I couldn’t sleep, but – Hey! Cute cat pictures on Facebook.

At some point, I decided I don’t want to talk about being a photographer (or a writer). I actually want to be a photographer (and a writer). I’ve made it a priority to take my camera out and get some photos, like this bald eagle momma and her babies.

At some point, you need to choose. Do you want to talk about being a writer, or do you want to write? Would you like to create, or just think about what you could create?

Prints of these photos and many others are available on Fine Art America!
